Venus Williams is definitely more experienced in Wimbledon matches compared to Tsvetana Pironkova. However that made little difference last season as the American fell in the quarters to the Bulgarian.
Venus Williams has an opportunity to avenge a loss from last year as the American will face Tsvetana Pironkova in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Pironkova defeated Williams in the quarterfinals last season in what was a tremendous upset at the time.
Williams, a five time champion at the All England Club, has been made to work hard in some of her matches at this year's tournament. But following her 6-0, 6-2 dismissal of Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, the American showed that she is clearly still capable of producing championship-winning form.
Pironkova, perhaps proving that her run to the semis last season was no fluke, made big headlines again this month as she caused one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far. The Bulgarian defeated second seed Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-3, a result that promises to send last season's runner-up tumbling in the rankings when they update next week.
Pironkova currently holds a 2-1 head to head record against Williams, and it looks like the former world No. 1 will need to work hard to level their series at 2-2. The American is regarded to be the favorite, but she can expect a real challenge.
